First off, you should decide your budget when shopping for a computer network card. Obviously, since you may not know much about wireless cards, you may not know how much they cost.
Don't worry too much about this however, since decent wireless network cards can be relatively inexpensive. Next, determine what kind of adapter you need do you have a laptop or desktop? If you have a laptop then a wireless USB adapter is better suited for the job and if you have a desktop then you might want to opt for a wireless PCI adapter instead.
Most new laptops have a wireless receiver built in, so verify this before spending your cash needlessly. You can click the network connection icon in your intray and verify whether or not there is wireless capability. USB wireless adapters are perfect for those with laptops looking for portability.
Locations where you can pick up Wi-Fi signals are everywhere, meaning you can be at a cafe or at the library and access the Internet. This means that you can travel and keep in touch via email or catch up on news back home. Right now, there are over 50,000 Wi-Fi locations in the US and rising. All you need to do is turn on your wireless network card and see if it picks up a signal. Usually it can find a number of different signals in which you just pick the one that is strongest.
Even if you don't need portability at home you can still take advantage of a wireless network. A wireless card with advanced encryption will help protect your computer data and keep your network secure. What type of wireless internet card should I purchase for my Sony Vaio?
It is an older laptop, Model # PCG-9211, I got it from a friend but have not used it yet. It has Windows XP and I would like to use it as a secondary computer for working on projects for work and school. Not looking for anything advanced, but my father will soon be purchasing a router to hook up to my 5 meg service so I might as well. I prefer to purchase one from Best Buy so im looking for suggestions. Wireless card or should I get one of the USB ones? Thanks in advance.
pcmcia and usb wireless adapters will work just as well as another. Which would be more convenient? A usb adapter will protrude from your laptop giving it a bit of a larger "footprint" whereas a pcmcia card will not. But eitherway, it's no big deal. The bus speed of both USB and PCMCIA is fine. just make sure to get one that supports the wireless standard that your router is. a/b/g or N.
