How do I upload pictures onto the computer from an HDD video camera?

I have a Panasonic HDD video camera that I'm having problems with. It seems that I cannot upload pictures or videos onto my computer. Every time I connect the USB cable to the computer, it says to connect the AC adapter. That is in no way related to the computer. How do I upload? What am I doing wrong?
